Comparison of high-dose intravenous methylprednisolone with low-dose oral prednisolone in acute renal allograft rejection in children.
Two corticosteroid regimens were compared in a randomised, prospective study of 48 consecutive acute rejection episodes occurring at least one month after transplantation in 22 children who had received renal allografts. The higher dose schedule (intravenous methylprednisolone 600 mg/m2 daily for three days) was no more effective than the lower (oral prednisolone 3 mg/kg daily for three days) i...

REJECTION CONTINUES TO BE A MAJOR PROBLEM confronting the transplant recipient and his surgeon. Acute reject, ion of renal allografts is commonly treated by increasing the daily oral dose of corticosteraids. Multiple complications of this therapy, including gastrointestinal hemorrhage and increased susceptibility to infection, have been reported. Intermittent large-dose intravenous corticosteroi...
متن کاملLetter: Acute arthralgia following high-dose intravenous methylprednisolone therapy.
SIR,-Withdrawal symptoms following the cessation of long-term steroid therapy are well known. These include exacerbation of prior symptoms such as recurrence of arthritis and arthralgia in the rheumatoid patient, or fever, myalgia, hypotension, anorexia, nausea, lethargy, and desquamation of the skin. In severe cases, signs and symptoms of acute adrenal insufficiency may also occur. Over the pa...
متن کاملBENEFICIAL EFFECT OF LOW DOSE CYCLOSPORINE WITH MMF (MYCOPHENOLATE MOFETIL) IN RENAL ALLOGRAFT RECIPIENTS
Background: Calcineurin inhibitors (CNI) have significantly reduced the incidence of acute rejection. Nephrotoxicity however may contribute to long-term allograft dysfunction. Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) may allow cyclosporine (CsA) dose reduction without increasing the risk of rejection. Methods: In seventy-eight living unrelated kidney transplant patients with renal dysfunction, we studi...
متن کاملHepatotoxicity after high‐dose intravenous methylprednisolone in multiple sclerosis patients
Hepatotoxicity is a rare adverse event of methylprednisolone that should be considered in clinical practice. In patients at risk, we propose liver function surveillance, by measuring hepatic enzymes concentration 15-30 days after methylprednisolone administration. Additionally, we propose ACTH, dexamethasone, or plasma exchange as alternate treatment options for these patients.
